What are RSS News Feeds?
One relatively new feature in the online media world is the
development of "feeds" that provide subscribers of those feeds
with updated content on a personalized site. If a site offers RSS feeds,
you can subscribe to these feeds, and then collect content from several
different sites on a personalized feed page or using an RSS
"aggregator."
So, you might subscribe to RSS feeds from TSL, CNN, USA Today, and
E!, and by personalizing a Google or My Yahoo! page, or by using an RSS
aggregator, you can view headlines and information from all of those
sites on one page. In effect, you are efficiently following many
different sites at once using these feeds.
If you have the latest browser version of Internet Explorer or
Firefox, your option for setting up TechSideline.com RSS feed into a
common aggregator is very simple (see info on aggregators below).
Popular RSS Feed Aggregators (Readers)
While we are listing only two major options below, there are plenty
of other services that offer RSS feed readers, like MSN, Live Bookmarks
(for your web browser) and many others. Check our link below to the RSS
Reader List for more options.
More RSS Feed Aggregators (Readers)

Example: Setting Up Google.com for TSL RSS Feeds
As an example, here's how to set up a personalized Google.com home
page for collecting RSS feeds (this assumes you don't have a
personalized Google.com home page already):
- Go to Google.com
-- you should see Google's very simple home page, with their search
box.
- Click "Personalized Home" in the upper right hand corner
of the page.
- Select or deselect the content options in "Choose from a
sampling of content to get started" box.
- Click the "Show my page" button.
- Find the link to the far right that says "Add stuff" and
click it.
- Up near the top, to the right of the "Search Homepage
Content" button, is a tiny link that says "Add by
URL." Click it.
- Enter http://www.techsideline.com/php-bin/news/feed.php
in the new box that appears, and click "Add."
- In the upper left hand corner of the page is a link that says
"Back to homepage." Click it.
- You now have a personalized Google home page that includes
TechSideline.com headlines, delivered via TSL RSS feeds!
To save your personalized Google home page, you can click the
"Sign In" link in the upper right hand corner and create a
Google account, if you wish.
More Questions?
Confession time: Although we now offer RSS feeds, we at TSL are not
proficient in their use. So if you've got more questions beyond the info
(and Google.com example) found here, please head to the message boards
and ask the folks there. TSL's readership is a great resource for
assistance.
