Football Recruiting Update by Will Stewart, TechSideline.com, 1/31/02 Justin London and Mike Imoh to Announce Today Linebacker Justin London and running back Mike Imoh will both announce their college decisions in separate press conferences today. London, out of Northside High School in Roanoke, has a press conference scheduled for 12:15, and TechSideline.com has been told by sources close to the Robinson High School program that Imoh's press conference is scheduled for 2:30. Hokie fans have steadfastly believed that London, who received a scholarship offer from Tech prior to his tenth grade year, will be a Hokie. But London typically has not named a leader and has not indicated that the Hokies are his team of choice. Sources tell TSL that the Hokies are in a dog fight with UCLA for London, and that the tide seems to be turning the way of the Bruins. We'll know later this afternoon. (Updated, 1/31/02 -- London verballed to UCLA. See TSLMail for details) Imoh has consistently named Tech as his leader and has also visited Pittsburgh and Wake Forest. Despite being a talented running back and a fairly highly-rated recruit, Imoh has not received much attention from the recruiting media, and his recruitment has been relatively quiet. A lot of that comes from Imoh himself, who got started late in the process and doesn't seem to relish being in the limelight or making a big deal about himself. Here is an update on the Top 10 players in the state of Virginia and their college choices and preferences.
Let's also take a look at an updated list of recruits left on Tech's board. Please note:
Dropped since last week: DL Jonathan Lewis (VT commit), DL Brian Mattes (ND commit), DL John Wood (never visited VT -- our report last week that he was at Tech on the weekend of 1/18 was erroneous -- and is no longer considering them). Added since last week: WR Donta Smith, WR Brenden Hill. Notes on Individual Players Still on the List DL Darryl Tapp: there was a possibility that Tapp would visit Florida on 2/1, but that will not happen, and Tapp has narrowed his choices down to VT and Maryland. He told Rivals.com's Mike Farrell on Sunday that he would probably announce this week, but no word yet. Tapp is truly torn between Maryland and Virginia Tech (he likes VT but has family in Maryland, close to the MD campus), and it's not known which school he'll pick. Tapp was apparently on the verge of picking Maryland before an in-home visit from Tech coaches Bryan Stinespring and Bud Foster got him to hold off. This one's coming down to the wire. WR Fred Lee: Lee was a Tech signee last year who failed to qualify. He went to Milford Academy, a Connecticut prep school, and has been giving strong consideration to Michigan State. Lee still has not qualified, and that is his major area of concentration at this point. Lee's published statements about Virginia Tech versus MSU have been non-committal, but his father seems adamant that Fred stick to his VT commitment. WR Donta Smith: the tall (6-5), lanky (195) Smith is a late entry who has appeared as other wide receiver targets have dropped off of Tech's list for various reasons. Sources tell us Smith, who has received a scholarship offer from Louisville, has not received a scholarship offer from Tech. The Hokies want to take an up-close look at him this weekend and make their decision. DL Jimmy Williams: The Hokies are pushing hard to land Williams, whom they consider to be a real find. Williams is split between VT and Alabama, and impending sanctions at Alabama are influencing his recruitment. Williams had a great visit to Virginia Tech last weekend with Marcus Vick and Darryl Tapp, and Tech defensive line coach Charley Wiles flew out to Pasadena, where Williams is currently playing junior college ball, to visit him earlier this week. Sources tell TSL that coaches Frank Beamer and Bud Foster were scheduled to visit Williams' mother in Memphis Wednesday night. LB Ahmad Brooks: still a mystery, Brooks told a Rivals.com reporter earlier this week that he favored Tennessee over Virginia and Virginia Tech, in that order. Brooks was originally scheduled to visit Penn State this weekend, but he has reportedly canceled that and will instead receive an in-home visit from Coach Joe Paterno. Sources tell us Beamer and Foster are going to visit Brooks in-home on Thursday night, which means Paterno will probably be there Friday.
