Virginia Tech scored a big-time target this week, receiving a verbal commitment from 6-4, 240-pound Brooke Point (Stafford, VA) defensive end Lanford Collins, the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star reports. TechSideline.com's 10th ranked player in the Postseason In-State Top 40, Collins pledged to the Hokies on Wednesday before releasing the news today.

According to the report, Collins, who is the 19th high school senior to commit to Tech's 2009 class, chose the Hokies over Virginia. Penn State joined a list of over 10 other Division 1A programs to extend a scholarship offer.

An intriguing athlete, Collins began his Brooke Point varsity football career as a running back and defensive back. He sprouted in the off-season before his junior season, though, and played defensive end and tight end his junior and senior seasons. He is being recruited to play defensive end at Tech.

Collins racked up 73 tackles including 12 tackles-for-loss and nine sacks as a junior. As a senior, he totaled 54 tackles including 14 tackes-for-loss and nine sacks en route to earning first-team all-district and first-team all-region honors.

At Tech, Collins will rejoin former Brooke Point teammate Isaiah Hamlette. Also a defensive end, Hamlette signed with Tech in last year's class.
