• Thursday night was a great night to be a Hokie. The team played very physical on both sides of the line of scrimmage.
• The win over Nebraska meant a lot to Gentry. He somewhat patterned the Tech strength and conditioning after Nebraska's. They were the pioneer in strength and conditioning.
• It's more than just pumping iron. It's about health and nutrition, sports psychology and sports medicine as well. It's a team effort.
• Tech isn't about developing weight lifters. It's about developing explosive athletes. For example, defensive end Jason Worilds has a 38.5 inch vertical jump. Orion Martin has a 39 inch vertical jump.
• Players who have worked really hard to turn themselves into quality players include Nick Marshman and Ryan Shuman. They had to change their body composition. Shuman is leaner, so he's able to get to the linebackers a lot better than before. It also takes pressure off his knees.
• Sean Glennon and Purnell Sturdivant are other guys who have excelled in the weight room. Glennon bench presses 375 pounds, which is a quarterback record at Tech.
• The varsity team is still lifting three or four times a week. They also condition a couple of times a week. The younger players are lifting religiously. They still need to get bigger, faster and stronger.
• Lorenzo Williams is very impressive for a young player. All of the young linebackers are good. Jake Johnson already bench presses 400 pounds. He comes ready to work every day.
• Ryan Williams is going to be a very explosive running back. Michael Via and several other young linemen are coming along as well.
• Kevin McCadam is a very good assistant strength coach. He brings the NFL perspective to Tech's young players.
• David Jackson is doing a great job with the men's basketball team.
• Even the golf team trains very hard. Tiger Woods sort of revolutionized weight training in golf.
• Miami is a tough team to match up with, but the Hokies have always had character and toughness. That's why they've had so much success against the 'Canes through the years.

• Tech had a good scrimmage against American. They went to the NCAA tournament last year and return basically their entire team.
• Tech played without A.D. Vassallo and J.T. Thompson. Thompson has had some stomach problems. He'll be checked on Tuesday to see if he has a sports hernia.
• Vassallo will be back in practice on Tuesday. He seems to be back to himself. His foot was really bothering him. He had a deep bruise right by his fifth metatarsal.
• Greenberg doesn't have any goals for April right now. His goal is to get better tomorrow. Jeff Allen played at a very high level over the weekend. Malcolm Delaney has had a great preseason overall. In the practice before the American scrimmage, Delaney was 10-of-13 from the field and 8-of-8 from the three-point line.
• Dorenzo Hudson played with much better pace offensively over the weekend. He also showed focus on defense.
• The coaching staff has not determined a starting lineup yet. Dorenzo Hudson is probably starting to separate himself a bit. The players can't get caught up in who is starting. All of those guys will play.
• Tech never really has a set, traditional 1-5 lineup. They play with a point guard, two wings and two forwards. There are a lot of lineup options. They are never going to be textbook. The ACC isn't textbook. This league is about attacking aggressively.
• Coach Hodges, Larry Bird's old college coach, lives in Blacksburg. He came and watched practice a couple of times this week, including the scrimmage on Sunday. He scouted the team for the coaching staff. He said they had swagger defensively. They were putting a lot of pressure on the ball.
• The early signing period is coming up on Wednesday.
• Gardner-Webb (Tech's opening opponent Friday night) averaged 23 three-point attempts per game last year. They won at Kentucky last year. They have four starters back from a year ago. They are a good team. They will live and die by the three-pointer.
• Victor Davila is going to be a very good player. College adjustments are tough for freshmen, but he's going to be a good one. He's like a computer. He sort of crashed on Sunday, but Greenberg rebooted him on Monday. He'll be ready on Friday.
• Davila can score, he just doesn't believe it all the time. Sometimes he looks to pitch it back out too much.
• Virginia Tech will scrimmage West Virginia next year. It will be a closed scrimmage.
• David Jackson is like a spiritual advisor to Jeff Allen. He's done a great job keeping his head in it. He's also a great strength and conditioning coach. The team is very, very strong.
• Tech plays a lot of basketball over the next couple of weeks. There are two games in Cassell, then Puerto Rico. Tech will play 25% of their regular season games in the first two weeks.

• The Duke game will kickoff at 5:30pm. It will be televised by ESPNU. It's an odd start time. However, it will be another night game in Lane Stadium. There should be another fireworks show, just like on Thursday night.
• Lane Stadium/Worsham Field was named the #1 football playing field in the nation on Monday. Weaver is very proud of that. Jason Bowers is in charge of the grounds crew, and he does a great job.
• The women's soccer team made the finals of the ACC tournament over the weekend. They also beat UVA twice. They've had four wins over teams ranked in the top 12 in the last two weeks. They are headed to the NCAA tournament, where they will play BYU on Thursday.
• Hokie Stone will not be put on the walls inside the stadium. Occasionally a player will get run into the wall, and something like that could result in an injury.

• The women's soccer team is very excited to be playing in the NCAA tournament.
• It means a lot to the program. It's a testament to the growth of the program. They have been building momentum since joining the ACC.
• The ACC is a tough conference. The Hokies beat Duke, UVA and Florida State over the past couple of weeks. It's arguably the top conference in the country. To make it to the NCAA tournament after making it through ACC play says quite a lot.

• Tech's players played hard and tough on Thursday night. They got the running game going, and the defense played great except for one play.
• The third quarter didn't go so well, but the Hokies dominated the fourth quarter.
• Sean Glennon was very good, and the receivers made some good plays for him. The protection was good, and he made some good throws.
• The wide receivers did a good job on Thursday. They are better receivers, but they were also downfield blocking well in the running game.
• Running the football will always be a priority for Tech. They'll try to establish the run against Miami. The 'Canes have a lot of talent, as usual. They are playing a lot of young true freshmen, but they can make plays. Their quarterbacks are athletic.
• Tyrod Taylor has been getting some work, and he's still listed as questionable. The quarterback decision will be made in pregame warm-ups again.
• Tech's "Wild Turkey" formation features Greg Boone at quarterback. It helped Tech against Maryland in certain parts of the game. It's something that has potential.
• Miami is much more athletic on defense than Maryland. They can redirect faster. They always have athletes on the field.
• A day before the Maryland game they felt like Sean Glennon would start. He looked good in pregame warm-ups, so they decided to start him.
• Tech is now looking at a three-game season. It was a four-game season last week, and the Hokies got past the first step.
• Justin Myer kicked off a lot better on Thursday night. He's going to get better as he goes through the strength and conditioning program.
