Frank Beamer held his weekly press conference on Tuesday afternoon, and he announced Virginia Tech's plans for quarterbacks Sean Glennon and Tyrod Taylor. Glennon has been named the starter, and Taylor will attempt to redshirt.

That means that at the quarterback position, 2008 is beginning similar to 2007. Last year Tech tried to redshirt Taylor, but he was playing as early as the LSU game. This year the offensive line is much improved, and Sean Glennon is a r-senior, so the attempt is being made again.

"We're gonna try to redshirt Tyrod Taylor," Frank Beamer said. "In the long run, if we can get this done, this is what we need to do."

The plan to redshirt Taylor could change at any moment. For example, if Sean Glennon is injured, especially early in the season, then Taylor would be Tech's quarterback. Beamer did not indicate that there was a timetable, saying that the situation would be evaluated week by week.

"If we stay away from injury," Beamer said, "Play well as an offense, this is good for the team."

If Tech is able to keep the redshirt on Taylor, he will be Virginia Tech's starting quarterback for three seasons: 2009, 2010 and 2011. That is more desirable than him splitting time for two seasons (2007 and 2008), and then being the full-time starter for just two years (2009 and 2010). It will also aid his long-term development, and could be particularly beneficial to the program in 2011.

In 2011, current freshmen such as Dyrell Roberts, Darren Evans, Josh Oglesby, Ryan Williams, Quillie Odom, Blake DeChristopher, etc. will be seniors.

Behind Sean Glennon and Taylor at quarterback is r-senior Cory Holt. Holt will play late in blowouts, similar to what he did in 2005, when Glennon was redshirted. Had Marcus Vick been injured in 2005, the redshirt would have come off Sean Glennon. If Glennon is hurt this year, the redshirt will likely be off Taylor, particularly if the injury occurs early in the season.

With the decision to make Glennon the starter, he will be Virginia Tech's first full-time r-senior starting quarterback since Al Clark in 1998.
