Rev. Zeke Profiles Tech's Recruits

Cannon School (Concord, N.C.) guard/forward Jarell Eddie and John Bartram (Philadelphia, PA) guard Tyrone Garland followed through on the commitments they made and signed letters of intent with Virginia Tech today. Today is the beginning of the Early Signing Period for Division 1 men's basketball. By next Wednesday, which is when the period ends, Cannon School (Concord, N.C.) guard/forward Jarell Eddie and John Bartram (Philadelphia, PA) guard Ty Garland are expected to sign letters of intent with the Hokies. Scout.com National Basketball Recruiting Director Dave Telep took some time to discuss Tech's class.

VT Pursuing Star GW-Danville Forward

Virginia Tech is one of a handful of major Division 1 programs to offer George Washington (Danville, VA) junior forward C.J. Barksdale, who made several unofficial visits to Blacksburg last month. The 6-7, 225-pound prospect is in no rush to make a decision, though, as he prepares for what he hopes will be a big 2009/2010 season.

6-6, 185-pound guard/forward Michael Gbinije enters his first year at Benedictine (Richmond, VA) seeking to improve a game that has already garnered high praise from national recruiting services. The standout junior, ranked a 5-star prospect by Scout.com and a 4-star recruit by Rivals.com, will be the Cadets most highly acclaimed prospect since forward Ed Davis, who signed with North Carolina in the 2008 recruiting class.

4-Star Commit Reflects on Official Visit

Cannon School (Concord, N.C.) star guard/forward Jarell Eddie enjoyed a packed itinerary on the official visit he made to Virginia Tech last weekend. The 6-7, 210-pound senior did everything from touring the new basketball practice facility to attending Virginia Tech's home football win over Marshall to having dinner at head coach Seth Greenberg's house. Overall, the Virginia Tech commitment seemed to have enjoyed the experience quite a bit.

Manning Discusses VT, Clemson Trips

John Manning's 3-school trip last week was productive...long, but productive. The 6-11, 220-pound Chantilly (VA) junior started last Wednesday with a visit to the University of Virginia, toured Virginia Tech last Thursday and ended with a trip to Clemson on Saturday. TSL caught up with the Manning following the first leg of the trip, and now he took time to discuss the latter two visits.

Standout Junior Center Making ACC Visits

Chantilly (VA) center John Manning is in the midst of a flurry of visits, taking in three ACC schools beginning with today's experience at the University of Virginia. The 6-11 junior, whose parents both attended UVa, has been to Charlottesville before. He has not, however, visited since Tony Bennett took over the program.

East Ridge (Clermont, FL) rising junior guard Robert Brown feels he found the "perfect situation" in Virginia Tech, which is why he verbally committed to Seth Greenberg in mid-July. The 6-4, 178-pound prospect, ranked a 4-star prospect by Rivals.com, is Tech's first commitment in the 2011 recruiting class.

Virginia Tech men's basketball head coach Seth Greenberg reeled in his first rising junior commitment today, when East Ridge (Clermont, FL) shooting guard Robert Brown pledged to the Hokies. Brown, a 6-4, 170-pound prospect, committed to Coach Greenberg and company this morning according to Florida Assault/Showtime Ballers AAU coach Diana Neal.

Tyrone Garland, a 6-1, 165-pound point guard out of John Bartram High School in Philadelphia (PA), has committed to Virginia Tech. Garland, a rising senior rated a 3-star prospect by Rivals.com and Scout.com, becomes the second prospect to commit to Seth Greenberg in the 2010 class.

6-4, 180-pound Jerian Grant claims five scholarship offers, including Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Providence, Virginia and Virginia Tech. The DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) standout rising senior, son of former Oklahoma and NBA standout Harvey Grant, is looking to sign in November but at this point does not have a favorite.

PF Barksdale One of State's Top Rising Juniors

Only twelve rising juniors were selected to participate in last week's NBAPA Top 100 Camp. One of the two state of Virginia rising juniors included George Washington (Danville, VA) standout C.J. Barksdale, a 6-7, 195-pound forward who is one of the Commonwealth's top prospects in the 2011 class.

Two-guard Jarell Eddie, Virginia Tech's lone commit in the 2010 class, enjoyed a successful junior season, leading the Cannon School (Concord, N.C.) to a conference co-championship and a quarterfinal appearance in the state playoffs. The 6-7 rising senior enjoyed taking a leadership role on what was a senior-laden Cannon squad in 2008/2009.

2011 Chantilly Standout Receiving ACC Interest

6-11, 215-pound center John Manning turned in a solid sophomore season in 2008/2009, averaging 13 points, 10 rebounds and over three blocks per game for Chantilly High School's (VA) varsity basketball squad. Manning, who boasts a 7'1" wing span, is pleased with how he developed as a sophomore.

Five Questions: Cadarian Raines and Manny Atkins

Cadarian Raines enjoyed great success in 2008/2009, with each player leading his respective team to a state championship game. Atkins, a 6-6, 180-pound prospect, averaged 25 points and 11 rebounds per game, while the 6-8 1/2, 220-pound Raines averaged 16 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks per contest. 4-Star Painter Available Again

Hargrave Military Academy (VA) senior power forward DeShawn Painter has received a release from the letter of intent he signed with the University of Florida, and the 6-9, 210-pound prospect is now free to be recruited by other schools. Painter knows of three schools that have shown immediate interest and expects to learn about more when he returns to Hargrave tomorrow.

Green Had Positive Impact for Paul VI

Erick Green's first and only season with Paul VI (Fairfax, VA) turned out to be a big success, both individually and team-wise. With the 6-2, 190-pound Green running the point, head coach Glenn Farello's squad (19-15 overall) captured its first ever VIS state championship. Green, who spent the first three years of his high school career at Millbrook High School, earned state tournament MVP honors.

Boggs Talks Injury, Recovery

Ben Boggs' high school basketball career came to an abrupt end on December 4th, when he suffered a broken right tibia and fibula on a baseline drive against Northside. A month later, the 6-4, 180-pound Hidden Valley (Roanoke, VA) star is in a more positive frame of mind and very much on the road to recovery.

John Marshall (Richmond, VA) junior forward Travis McKie flirted with the idea of making a college decision prior to the 2008/2009 season. The 6-6, 190-pound prospect is considering seven schools - Clemson, Florida (no offer), North Carolina (no offer), Virginia, VCU, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest - and now seems content to wait before making a pledge to one of them.

Boggs Officially Becomes a Hokie

6-4, 180-pound Hidden Valley (Roanoke, VA) guard Ben Boggs signed a letter of intent last week, officially accepting a scholarship to play for head coach Seth Greenberg. It was a special day for Boggs, who verbally committed to Virginia Tech a little over a year ago.
