Two weeks ago, I posted after the Miami win and we were at an RPI of
79. The RPI actually went up to 77 on 1/27. The RPI site was
predicting we would win the rest of our home games. Since then, the
RPI has been headed in the wrong direction because of the 4-game
losing streak which includes home losses to Maryland and Wake
Forest and a road loss at NC State. These three teams rank 8th, 9th
and 10th in the ACC in RPI. Our RPI was 111 prior to yesterday’s
game, so it may go down a bit after yesterday’s loss. The 111 RPI is
still an improvement over last season’s 166, and is close to the 98 that
was registered in 2007-2008 campaign. Currently our RPI ranks last in
the ACC. Win or lose the RPI probably takes another hit after the
game against Savannah State who currently has an RPI of 328 (out of a
possible 345).
Counting the ACC Tourney, we have at least 7 games left, so the
opportunities for post-season play may still exist if we can win some
games down the stretch. We have some very winnable conference
games at home and still have the opportunity to improve upon the 2-13
conference records of the two previous seasons. Wouldn’t it be great to
prove wrong the preseason prognosticators who predicted us to finish
last in the ACC? Go Hokies!
