doesn't really help the lower seeds and the same thing would happen in men's bball
if higher seeds hosted.
The only 16 seed to ever win an NCAA tournament game was the battle of the
brains when 16 seed Harvard won at No. 1 seed Stanford circa 1997.
and to be blunt. I don't think there are as many great coaches as there are in
women's bball as there are in men's. For every 1 Geno in wbb there are 10 in the
men's game.
Who's the best young coach in the women's game? I don't watch as much women's
bball as I used to, so I don't know how accurate I'm being, seems like all the top
coaches from the 90s when I watched a lot are much older and living off past
success. The UNC coach (don't think she's a great coach), the UVa coach,
Georgia's coach. Yeah those programs will have top 10 and top 20 rankings b/c
they have some of the best players, but when I watch them play I don't see good
basketball. Nothing like I see from UCONN. I always thought the Iowa State coach
did a good job, liked the way they play and they have ZERO talent, yet they always
manage to do well b/c of the coach IMO. Stanford does a good job, the old Duke
coach and some GREAT teams, but when the "best" coaches in wbb wins playing
bad basketball (just my opinion) it's not good for the game.
I had touched on this on the olympic sports board once when talking about women's
field hockey. Everywhere else in the world field hockey is a mens and womens
game. Not in the US obviously. USA field hockey is not very good. All the top
teams in the NCAA have a male assistant coach from Europe or Australia who do
ALL the coaching. (I'm being serious, they do all the coaching) If you need proof,
look at Wake Forest who won 3 straight NCAA titles in the early 2000s, their male
coach left for another school, didn't replace him with a male and they haven't been
close to winning. With no male influence in the game here in the US, the coaching
and culture of the sport suffers.
I think this relates in some ways to wbb. I know that sounds incredibly sexist and
I'm probably wrong, but I do think there's something to it...
any thoughts, did anyone actually read all that???
