and getting along should NOT be assumed. When you make hires, you
made hedged bets that someone will be a good fit. Sometimes you
have evidence prior to a hire. Being a coach, being hired by other
coaches, and hiring coaches.... you make choices based on some
factors. You could hire the next great assistant coach who has a great
reputation for Xs and Os....but then you find out that the person really
has a different style than you prefer or that the asst. coach doesn't
defer enough and acts more like the head coach. It may have not been
evident during the interview process because people are putting on a
good face and answering questions a certain way. Maybe you don't get
that type of input in references.
There are numerous examples where coaching staff compatibility is
found out AFTER The FACT. Happens all the time.
