I understand it was trending positively. I also don't think we have enough
evidence to say that we are trending negatively. We had one year where
we truly stunk. We signed an ACC-caliber recruit in Barbour during the
midst of this down-turn so you could say that there was positive in this.
Unfortunately, it seems we signed the wrong recruit in that she was
going to be a head-case (politely said, could be wrong).
the one thing that I think people have to remember is that we are
currently caught in a sitaution where we were caught without a good
transition group between the seniors who left in 2006 and the
sophomores/freshmen and Cook who we had to rely on 2007. It would
have been great to have had some more juniors or seniors who could
have led this team and made an impact last year. This could be seen
as a criticism in recruiting but we know plenty of football teams who
have had years where suddenly they lost a lot of seniors and suddenly
have to replace them with inexperience players. The men's basketball
team was in this situation this year and most people think they over-
achieved. That is hard to expect.
So I am not as concerned about this ONE year as some people are. I
understand what led to it and don't necessarily think that it is a
reflection of the quality of the staff. And the GP issue to me is not
necessarily a sign of a sick program. It could easily be a dynamic that
occurred that was not goiing to work and he needed to go. And as far
as I am concerned, the head coach is the boss and it isn't a matter of
BD being intimidated by GP's ego or assertiveness. He is Not the
headcoach and as such needs to take his cues from her.
Now there still is the question as to whether the staff can recruit ACC-
caliber players. That is the one question that over time has to be
answered. I think they can without GP. There are going to be players in
VA and other states who will come to VT. I am not stressed about the
staff NOW because I know the circumstances of this year but I still
want to see over-time how the get players and coach them.
