The Hokie ice hockey team (club level) defeated the Duke Blue Devils 3-
1 tonight at the Roanoke Civic Center behind two goals from junior
forward Rick Onorato and some sparkling goaltending from sophomore
Travis Young.
The Hokies struck first at the 6:13 make of the first period when
Onorato tapped in a rebound after the Duke goalie stopped a blast from
the point from defenseman Mitch Clark.
The Blue Devils had two golden chances to tie the game a few minutes
later but Young robbed both shooters from point blank range. The first
period ended 1-0 with the Hokies having outshot Duke 11-5.
Freshman forward James Lazzarotti pushed the gap to 2-0 with a shot
from the right wing just 3:44 into the second period and it looked like
the Hokies might put the Devils away as they were dominating play.
But a questionable penalty call put the Devils on a power play and it
only took 6 seconds for the Devils to cut the margin to 2-1 with 7:16 to
go in the period. The Duke goal would be one of just four shots the
Devils got in the period, compared with 15 for the Hokies.
In the third period, the Devils came out stong and with 4 minutes gone,
got a skater out on a breakaway. Once again, Young came up huge
with the stop. Shortly after, Onorato gave the Hokies some breathing
room at the 6:25 mark, burying a beautiful right wing shot in the upper
left corner of the net to provide the final margin of victory.
For the game, the Hokies outshot Duke 38-17.
The Hokies will be back in action next Saturday night at home versus
Georgetown. Georgetown is a member of the ACCHL so it's a
conference game. Puck drops at 7:30.
GO HOKIES!!!!
