Subject: Big Weekend for VT Wrestling! Dresser Report!
Posted by: HokieWrestling on Tue Nov 3 2009 12:46:19 PM
Message:

I want to reach out to all TSL fans and invite ALL to Blacksburg this
Saturday afternoon as we kick off our season at 1 pm vs. Kent State,
followed by a dual vs U of Tenn-Chattanooga later @ 5 pm. Sunday is
turning out to be a HUGE day also. If you go to www.hokieopen.com you
can see that we are between 450-500 college wrestlers coming to the
Salem Civic Center. All details are on the website including all the
entries. Big event!!

I also want to talk a bit about this weekend. We will be hard pressed
to come out against Kent State with a "W" for two reasons. One, they
are very good! And secondly, we will be without at least 3 and maybe
4 of our projected late season/tournament time starters. A few
nagging injuries, a one match suspension, and a HWT who is still
playing football will limit our success early. That doesn't mean that
I don't think this team can be the best ever in VT history...to the
contrary. WE just won't be at full strength this first month. IF we
stay healthy, this team could be very good come tourney time!! Very good!

A couple of notes that I have been getting a lot of emails about.

125 Jarrod Garnett has all the tools to be an All American this
year!! We just need consistency now that he has grown into a sophomore.

133. Incoming Freshman Erik Spjut from Texas is starting and getting
better everyday. He is a goer!!

141. Chris Diaz is again the front runner and has the ability to be a
HIGH All American with good effort in the practice room. Stay tuned!!

149. Pete Yates will be our guy at 149. He did lose a wrestle off
this past weekend to an OUTSTANDING true freshman, Brian Stephens. It
was not a weight management issue. I like Pete greatly underestimated
just how tough Brian Stephens is as a freshman. It also lets all of
our guys know that practice is practice and competition is a different
animal. Stephens was an animal this past weekend. Stephens will
redshirt and Yates will move up to 157 next year!

157. Jesse Dong will sit out on Saturday due to a suspension for a
conduct issue handed down last spring. Fighting never pays regardless
of how much you are provoked!!

165 Matt Epperly is looking good!

174 Anthony Trongone is having some weight issues and might struggle
early but has been wrestling tough. Should be a good year for ANT.

184 Tommy Spellman is once again the man here. We hope he is more
offensive this year. He worked hard this summer.

197 Could be one of three guys. Incoming freshman Chris Penny or senior
Tim Miller will start early and might trade time. DJ Bruce will move
down from HWT to 197 in January to challenge for this spot.

HWT DJ Bruce will start here however we hope to have true freshman
Andrew Miller from football soon. Andrew is currently red shirting
this year with football. Once we get the green light from Coach
Beamer, Andrew will be in the line up. Andrew has been working out
with us on his DAYS OFF and he really could be very good. 6' 5" and
285! The dude is a man!

Hope that gets everyone up to speed. Come see us!!
