An opinion:
Although the program has improved in the past few years, it's still
not where it was from about 60-86. And the fan following is not what
it is at most ACC schools. Most games have a couple thousand empty
seats, while the crowds against big ACC opponents are littered with
their colors. I've seen talk in this chat room about how loud Cassell
Coliseum gets. For those who don't venture much outside of Montgomery
Country, I can tell you the atmosphere is still nothing like the old
days, and nothing like it is at a major D1 program.
Becoming a major player in the ACC (some may argue we are already
there) and a perennial NCAA tournament participant is not an easy
thing. The program is not going to get back there overnight. Until
that time, expect to see lots of empty seats, Carolina Blue, Duke
Blue, Wake Forest tie-dyes, orange Tiger paws, etc.
