My daughter attends the same high school and actually has a couple of
classes with him. Having watched him since the 8th grade I can tell you
that you will not find a harder working kid anywhere than Ben Boggs.
Add to that his great basketball IQ and toughness and you have the
makings of a solid player. Not a lot of people know this, but he played
in the state tournament this year with a couple of injuries, one to his
elbow and one to his calf that would have sidelined most players.
The thing about Ben is he continues to work on his game to refine it for
the role he needs to play. At HV he could step out and hit his jump
shot, but the style the team played called for him to be more of a
slashing, take it to the rack scorer. They played a very up tempo game
so you didn't see a lot of half court offense. Couple that with the
smaller high school floor size and there are not many opportunities for
Ben to shoot uncontested 3s.
It will be interesting to see how the style of play evolves this year with a
new coach and the graduation of some key players off of last years
team.
The biggest question I have about Ben is does he have the quickness to
defend the 2 guard. Ben is very long so he can cover a lot of space in
one step, but his quickness at the next level is a legitimate question.
Ben also needs to work on the consistency of his jumper particularly in
traffic. Again, at HV this has not been something he has had to do
frequently. His mechanics are solid (excellent free throw form), but
more game reps are needed. Same thing with consistency as he
increases his range. I think he has the tools they just need to be
sharpened. Finally, he needs to become better passer especially in
the half court, but again that is not the style HV played.
Ben is a true gym rat that I think will become a nice two or three for us.
At this point I'm not sure that I see him at least early on as a night in
and night out starter, but we all know for at least this past year that
Seth changes his rotation based on match-ups. He has a skillset that I
think is at the very least a fit in that situation. Based on Ben's heart
and work ethic I would not be surprised to see it grow well beyond that.
