It does make sense (if true) that the SEC would want the Big12 champ to have as difficult a path to their championship as the SEC champ. I don't think it has as much to do with the bowl game, although the SEC may have used that as the incentive to prompt Big12 expansion. The SEC has much to gain with an expanded Big12. It creates more hurdles for the Big12 champ which helps SEC teams in national title picture. It also potentially weakens the ACC, which may hep the SEC expand into the sates they most covet. In the end, the SEC wants fewer teams competing for the playoff to increase the likelihood of placing multiple teams in the tournament.

Yeah, anything is possible, but this game is already going to happen. The conditions would be out well before the announcement, IMO.
