i hate to go the conspiracy route usually, but the optimistic side of me says that we're letting ND extend their NBC deal FIRST. we then bring them on as a FULL member. ESPN can't touch the ND home games, but they add a handful of ND away games to their annual ACC portfolio plus we get a 16th team for even more football inventory and the rest of ND's and #16's sports. the addition of 2 teams allows us to go back to the table with ESPN who still has to up the ante, and we likely move up the ACC Network timing to ASAP. ND rolls their NBC revenue into the league coffers so all sides benefit with fully equal rev sharing.
ACC gains 4-5 league games on NBC every year to get us out of the ESPN headlock. ESPN still has to pay us more for adding 2 new markets (1 being national) and additional inventory of 2 teams (well, 1.5 since NBC keeps ND home games), and we get to speed up the ACC Network timing.
again, that's a lot of moving parts, almost too many to have any merit, and this is definitely a PATT/glass half full post, but it's a gut feeling that's been growing lately...i guess we'll see.
