I have *always* had back button issues. Still do, and I'm running IE 8.0.
It seems to stem from blocked adds/widgets on the page. If there is a blocked add (from the admin level), then it seems to add a new page in the back page list, or something like that. So if I hit the back button once, it doesn't change the screen view, because it's just trying to load a blocked ad on the same page.
For example, my What's New tab. (I open all threads in a new tab, so I don't have to back out to the board index.) The previous page in that tab was another What's New click. But if I use the back page pulldown (the little arrow next to the back/forward buttons), I see:

etc, and no last page in sight. There's a lot of them maybe because it's a timed refresh on the ad? Anyways, I click What's New again, and this is what I see in the back page pulldown:

The links above are incomplete due to the text cutoff in the pulldown menu, and may be incorrect, as I couldn't cut/paste.
This is an issue I've always had, mostly likely due to work restrictions. It's just something I've learned to get around. I keep a board index in its own tab, and open threads in new tabs. If I need to go back, I use the back page pulldown to get there, instead of using the back button.
It's a good thing my job isn't going to Chrome, as no back page pulldown exists.
