If they are going the selection committee route, like it sounds is their first choice, I wouldn't count on seeing VT in the playoffs. The selection committee method hasn't worked out too well for us in basketball, and as crazy as it may sound, I trust a seasons worth of several different computer numbers averaged together as a formula (with maybe a slight human element, say 1/3, if they must) a lot more than I trust a few high-ups in the back room with no transparency required. It just makes it too easy to include bias, favoritism, and possibly corruption in the process.

Playoff, YES. Selection committee, HELL NO

Yea ~ agreed: VT and 'selection committee' has never worked out very well {too dependent on 'Q' factor which I guess we do not have enough of}...

Selection Committee + a very small number of teams selected (i.e., 4 v. 30+ in basketball) = college football becoming more of a beauty pageant than it currently is under the BCS.

This selection committee notion is HORRIBLE. They should just take teams 1-4 in the final BCS standings. At least there are SOME objective components to the BCS formula. There is too much money on the line for these schools and I don't think it'll take long for corruption to occur within the committee. JMO.

I agree that a BCS formula, or something very similar, should be used. The biggest problem with the BCS is already being solved in going to a 4 team playoff... not sure why the formula needs to be scrapped. I guess a selection committee will allow them to choose an SEC runner up instead of an undefeated ACC, Big East or mid major team.... an option you know they want to have. Corruption will exist immediately... it is impossible to find 4 people who know enough to make legitimate selections, and at the same time have zero bias. Completely impossible.

Edit: I don't know why I said 4, there will probably be more people than that involved in the committee... making it even harder to find neutral and knowledgeable members

I disagree. I think a selection committee will favor mid majors or non-trads (eg, a 1 loss #8 Northwestern over a 1 loss #4 FSU)

It isnt like basketball. The bowls themselves (along with the cities who host, and the winning bidder for the championship game) will still want teams that travel very well and bring big TV ratings. A selection committee instantly has ND, SEC, and Texas favoritism written all over it.

Yep. That same favoritism exists now within the Harris Poll voters and perhaps some of the Coaches Poll voters. But the BCS formulae don't care one bit about tradition or TV market. It'll be a shame to lose that small sliver of objectivity in the process -- if that is indeed what happens.

A selection committee will guarantee first consideration to the 'Big 4.' I mean, it won't even be hidden.

At least the BCS had facts and data behind a third of the formula.

    They won't favor a 1-loss Nevada over a 1-loss FSU, or a 1-loss Wyoming over a 1-loss Georgia.
