It seems to me that the SEC is doing everything they can to make sure that Notre Dame does not join a (ACC?) conference. ND is the only team the ACC could add that would raise the profile to a level approaching the SEC. The B12 is aiding in that effort by suggesting the Big 12 would be open to admitting the Irish for all sports except football.
The Conference Champion model for the 4 team playoff is pretty much off the table. It is likely the 4 teams will be selected by a selection committee using polls, strength of schedule, "intangibles" with perhaps a small bump given for winning conference.
This will satisfy the SEC, Big 12 and Notre Dame. Which, apparently, are the only ones that matter.
Or they could decide to just do a "+1" and let the polls decide the whole thing. Just let the bowls pick the teams much the way they do now and then do another BCS poll after the bowl games are done and the top 2 play for the title.
