Play the best to be the best

I am so sick of listening to Weaver talk about busing to games and we are in the geographical center of the acc. If he wants a bus leagues then go to the ODAC. If all you want to play is cupcakes in small stadiums with 50 percent attendance then go to c-USA. with all due respect, you are great at counting numbers, but you are not a

While the higher ups may have their finger on the pulse and are taking care of VT, I want to play the best to become the best, have lots of excited VT fans and lot of opposing fans in an expanded Lane Stadium.

I want to play on the big stage and be on the big stage. ACC football is not the big stage. Beamer struggles in the big stage games because we feast on small time teams in small time stadiums (duke, wake, GT, BC, MD, Cuse). Going to those is simple on a bus, but they do not prepare you for the big stage games. Boise for years has been willing to play on opponents big stage, they did well, and they learned how to win in big stage games.

Weavers handling of the basketball situation was major small time. He proved we are a football school. I am just sick of sticking our academic noses up in the air and parading around as big time while playing a weak football schedule in the basketball centric ACC. IF we mode to another to play big boy football I am convinced we will do terrific. I just wish the bean counters and academics would realize how much we can prosper and quit acting holier than thou by talking about how good it is to rub shoulders with Dukies, Deacons, Eagles, etc. in pitiful stadiums with apathetic snotty fans who do not realize the power of big time college football. Thank you, I feel better now.

You should un-convince yourself of this, unless you think Virginia Tech could raise their athletic revenue by about $30,000,000 per year at the drop of a hat.

Don't we expect to compete with the big boys now? I get that we would need to increase stadium size, continue to improve facilities, etc. over time but I'm in the camp that thinks we would do fine right now, maybe I'm wrong.

Tech is one of the top spenders on football in the ACC. Consequently, they are always at or near the top of the conference in performance metrics (winning percentage, competing for--and winning--conference championships, etc.) The only teams in the SEC that Tech would reliably outspend are Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and the 2 Mississippi schools (possibly Missouri, I haven't looked at them recently). Tech could get within striking distance of a couple of schools like South Carolina, maybe Arkansas and Georgia, enough to have about a 0.5 winning percentage over the course of several seasons. However, Georgia is about $20,000,000 per year ahead of Tech, and at least 5 other schools are upwards of $40,000,000 per year ahead.

For this reason, it's no surprise when Tech loses to USC, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Alabama; in fact, I expect them to lose nearly every game they play like that. Most of the bad losses in big games that Tech has taken on a "national stage" were the ones like Kansas, Boston College, and Boise State. Had Tech won the games like those 3, I'd say that they're doing as well as can be reasonably expected.

I agree with you. I am so bored with the ACC and adding Pitt and SU has made it even worse for football. You are exactly correct about the level of competition; that's why we suck in the bowl game when we play an "elite" team. We may get lucky every few years, but we'll never compete on that level as long as we play our schedule. I don't think it would take us long to compete in the SEC.

Florida State and Miami won national championships while playing in weak, crappy, boring conferences (ACC and Big East). Tech made it to the national championship game as football member of the Big East. I can understand why so many here want to join the SEC, but there is more to conference membership than just football. IF Tech only fielded football, I would be for a move to the SEC. I guess I am one of the few here that likes Tech playing basketball, soccer, volleyball, wrestling, lacrosse, softball, and baseball in the ACC. Maybe Weaver can have Tech become an associate member of the SEC for just football? The last sentence was TIC.
