I posted a version of this as a comment to Chris's article and wanted to see if anyone here had any further thoughts on the issue.
VT publicly seems to place geography above other concerns. I understand that we have about 5 or 6 ACC teams that are within a doable drive, and I understand that that's important to a lot of fans, cheaper for the school, and handy for the AD, but I think it's a luxury you can't have anymore if you want to have a "national team".
Definition of a National Team: nationwide recruits, having teams from all over the nation want to schedule you, being a prime goto spot for Gameday etc. Examples: UT, USC, the OSU, Okla., Michigan, Florida, formerly PSU, 'Bama, Nebraska.
Right now I think VT is a very good regional team. Maybe that's what the BOV and everyone down to Beamer wants, and they are not interested in expanding.
Any Thoughts?
