Traffic logistics seem to be the biggest hurdle in adding 30 to 40k additional seats. It is not likely that filling in corners would add that many seats.
It may be more reasonable to build a new stadium with the future in mind... possibly closer to 460. Obviously that would take years of planning. The big issue would be determining if Lane Stadium could handle another expansion and could stand for 75 to 100 years, or if it is time to consider building a new Lane Stadium with 100,000 seats.
We also need to learn from FSU... they have an SEC size stadium, but have not sold out in a decade or so. If FSU can't stay at the top for ever, what would make anyone think that wouldn't happen at VT some time in the future? Joining the SEC would be great for football at VT, but it does open up all kinds of stadium and traffic issues, that could stimulate the economy short term. Would a new Lane Stadium, or an expanded Lane Stadium have a good return for the money and effort?
It really is too soon after the latest expansion of Lane Stadium to start thinking of building an entirely new stadium, but we will need more seats if VT moves to the SEC. That is the biggest issue I believe keeping VT out of the SEC. Why take on a massive debt when you don't have to? Lane Stadium is a good size for the ACC.
