or enthusiasm levels have plateaued along with the performance level of various programs & recent . While we certainly appreciate the annual season record performance in football...there are several hurdles that give the indication the program has plateaued......the mediocre (at best) bowl record/performance ; the
inability to beat/ truly compete (for full game) against the true perennial MNC
contenders. (Look at ticket sales for bowl games --even buy & donate ticket didn't work--school ate about 7,500??? tickets). Few really believe we will really challenge for NC.
Inabilility to land the 4 & 5 star recruits (compared to the traditional national powers). We usually finish as also ran for top players(even in our own state---our proclaimed primary recruiting area). Sometimes, some of our biggest recruits come from kids outside of the state (what does this say about what Va. HS athletes think of our program?) Our coaches are great but lack of depth of players with speed, talent, endurance, & size to (consistently) compete for a full 60 minutes against the Bamas of the world is not there. Sure we hang in there for 3 qtrs - but inevitably our radio team gives the usual "we played great but just got physically worn down by a team with a wealth of fresher, bigger, faster athletes- they just couldn't hold on to the lead". We & the other honest ACC programs- (rule out CU,FSU,Miami) stress academics beyond athletics--we expect & work to have our players graduate. The SEC, B12, go the other route.......i.e. whatever it takes to keep the athlete in the program until they go pro.....if they happen to graduate - great......but winning (at all costs) comes first. The beatdowns by Clemson was unexpected by fans.

In terms of BBall, remote location hampers ability to annually recruit the top urban based players to get us over the hump. Greenberg had national name, exposure, and
the ability to attract such players. ( I think he was too intense for his own good..
he practiced the players to point of exhaustion & injury before season started --seemingly resulting in the loss of 1 or 2 starters before the season even started.
Despite the hiring of JJohnson to retain players... the top player & top recruit bolted. Expectations (excitement) for bball prospects in near future non-existent for the few season ticket holders I know.

Right now --- as maybe evidenced by the posting drops---- I don't sense any real excitement or expectations for the coming year.....hopes of many, yes.... any of their expectations of championships this year- no.
