They wouldn't be if the ACC as we know it starts falling apart, which it won't...FSU's not leaving.
If they do, it's a financial nightmare waiting to happen for them. They'll lose money on all sports other than football and won't be able to afford it. Imagine flying volleyball, baseball, track teams all the way to Texas and Oklahoma. $$$$$$

I don't remember the exact quote, but when Jim Weaver said that VT preferred to stay in the ACC, I believe he added the qualifier "in its (the ACC's) current configuration."
I would hope ... really hope ... that if the ACC is about to get gutted, that VT admins and BOV will do the smart thing with regards to athletics. I know that it's not ALL about athletics, and that school presidents and BOVs see things through an academic filter, but I really hope they do the smart thing with regards to athletics ... if it comes to that.Always use "Reply With Quote", so everyone knows to whom you're responding.

My worry is two concerns
First; BOV appear to be risk adversed; and with the budget constraints with the university, they question if they can ramp it up to SEC big 12 or big 10 level and maintain the program in the black. (They are using their endowment to keep the school academic program exceptional since no money from the state, they dont want to have the burden to maintain athletics.
Second, With VT athletic leadership not in the best of health and endurance, I wonder if we really have the a team ready to support. (Weaver with parkinson and back issues, Sharon's problems and not high level of confidence in gabbert) this is not prime time. And also VT feels loyal to the ACC, however I hope this loyalty is not blind and we are supporting a dying conference we are left to be custodian.
This time, whoever is not in the 4 conferences will be always relegated to second level. So all VT's investments for athletics will probably be over-committed to a program competing with the lights of ECU, Memphis. While our peer schools are all prime time.
I hope our president, working on the BCS President's council are making the behind the room discussions that is required.

Are you kidding? If the ACC is gutted by the departure of two of its most marketable football commodities, what's the bigger risk? Staying in a marginalized ACC or grabbing a seat at the table in the SEC where you are assured of taking in at least an extra $7-$8 million a year over and above what you're taking in now?
I'd submit that in those circumstances, the "risk averse" move is to run to the SEC as fast as possible.
