I would happily accept any of these scenarios, but don't think the Alabama, Florida and Georgia schools would care too much for the second one.

I'm talking about academics, geographic location (e.g. their cities/towns, locations to airports), etc. Even if we were in the SEC we'd be saddled most likely by Vanderbilt and Kentucky as our regional "rivals." The ACC is a MUCH better fit culturally for Virginia Tech.

Schools = academics. Teams = sports.
Heck, half the SEC is a SAFETY school for Virginians rejected by Virginia Tech. I've got a family member with a 970 SAT (verbal, math) and a 3.1 GPA who got rejected from VT and accepted by Alabama. These schools would be our new peers? Great.
