I know he gets to practice with our 2012-13 team which helps him learn the system before he actually plays for us in competition. and helps our eligibles get better.

I expected JJ and staff to find someone who could play significant substitute minutes for us this season (2012-13) by the time we got through the OOC season.

It's simple. It provides a bit of "rounding" out of the class of 2012. We've got Wood (who is a 3/~4). And now we've got Smith (who is a 2/~1). The only thing we lack in this class is a legitimate big man.

Whether or not any true freshman can get significant minutes is debatable. We don't know if Wood will get any PT next year, either. So the fact that Smith won't get any PT isn't the issue. It's whether he can round out our team and help us in 2013 - 2016.
