It's simple. It provides a bit of "rounding" out of the class of 2012. We've got Wood (who is a 3/~4). And now we've got Smith (who is a 2/~1). The only thing we lack in this class is a legitimate big man.
Whether or not any true freshman can get significant minutes is debatable. We don't know if Wood will get any PT next year, either. So the fact that Smith won't get any PT isn't the issue. It's whether he can round out our team and help us in 2013 - 2016.
