First, as a freshman he played in 31 games averaging 13.7 points per game. That sounds great, but in the first 15 games he scored 14 or more points 10 times. In the last 15 games he only scored 14 or more points 4 times. He also scored more than 14 points in the 16th game. I think this means teams learned how to defend him and were able to significantly limit his scoring.

To take it a step further, UNCW played Hofstra, the second worst team in the CAA league, twice. In the first meeting Smith scored 18 points. Pretty good. In the second meeting he scored 6 points in 26 minutes. IMO thats shutting him down. If a team that isn't ACC quality can do that to him, what will average ACC teams do? Remember Maryland was UNCW's first game of the season, which means limited tape on Smith. They know what to expect now.
Calm down and compare his stats with DFS (the guy everyone is crying over losing). DFS could not score a bucket for nearly 5 straight games at one point........inconsistency is part of being a frosh. Hitting a wall is part of being a frosh. Not knowing how to adjust is part of being a frosh. My point is, this Smith guy definitely has his share of head scratching stats; however, his stats alone still make him more impressive than ANY of our freshmen last season from a scoring standpoint.......in other words, he has shown me enough (and obviously JJ) to warrant a spot on VT's roster......
