I saw all these posts about how this kid needs a lot of shots and isn't efficient, etc. etc. As if he's a ball hog. That's bullcrap, and obviously said by someone who doesn't understand the big picture of athletics at all.

First off, this kid is a TRUE FRESHMAN and was the #2 scorer on a team that struggled. That means his team is asking him to take a lot of shots and score the ball.

Secondly, someone was complaining about his efficiency. That's also bullcrap. The kid shot 33% from 3-point, and 38% from the field. Well, guess what? That's pretty damn good for a freshman. If you don't get that then you know nothing about college hoops, and nothing about VT hoops in particular.

Here are Erick Green's numbers from his F and S years (FG / 3-pt / FT):
2009-2010 .293 / .275 / .679
2010-2011 .414 / .248 / .777
So, it wasn't until Green's 2nd year that he even approached what this kid did in his first year. BTW, Erick Green was 2nd team All ACC last year. Huh.

Care to review Malcolm Delaney's numbers?
2007-2008 .420 / .402 / .787
2008-2009 .385 / .354 / .869
Wow! Those are eerily similar to Smith's numbers his first year.

But nobody here would have been too excited about Malcolm, right? He needed the ball a lot and took lots of shots. We don't need that kind of player at VT. You know, the 1st team All ACC type players. Who needs them?

Oh, yeah. This kid Smith isn't really a good defender and isn't too tall. Yep, VT's roster is just too stacked with tall & athletic great defenders who also are great shooters and skilled ball handlers! No room for this kid at all!

Sheesh.
I agree with most of your post, but 40% is not similar to 33% imo (3-pt shooting between MD and Smith)
