If VT can consistently run it's athletic department at a healthy profit while overseeing a significant expansion in facilities, there is absolutely no reason why Florida State should not be able to do so as well.

Florida will spend $99M on their athletic while FSU will only spend around $40M next season. Florida's athletic department routinely ran a surplus and gave $6M to general student population last year while FSU's athletic department is facing a $2.4M budget deficit next season. If FSU's athletic department wants to compete against Florida, it seems to me that they need more revenue.

took the words out of my mouth...the parallels to govt. waste are too close to ignore. How much is "enough" to educate a 3rd grade kid...$3,000 a year? $5,000? $10,000? $20,000? when will the money go round stop? I've got a good idea when that will happen and it's going to be very painful and in the near future too.

Agree. Major college athletics have several unsustainable trends. Change is coming eventually. The sad thing is that university presidents can fix the problems any time they want by simply admitting they have been making their decisions based on revenue streams and not academics and then stop doing that.

I agree. This was/is a warning shot to the ACC brass. Before I didn't think that there was any way that FSU would ever really leave for the Big 12. Now, I'm not so sure.

Isn't it too late for warning shots? Big Baby Blue Swoffard has signed the deal...FSU and the rest of us have to live with it.

disagree - if FSU is $2.5m in the hole then they need to stop spending as much money. Additional revenue is great but if you can't manage your budget now, you won't manage it just because I give you $10 more.

doesn't KU play like 40 BB games? So 1/4 of the games aren't covered by T1-T2. If FSU was better in the ACC, they'd probably only have 2 (max) games not covered. But alas they aren't the FSU from the 90s anymore. They are not VT from the 00s either. Their self image is about as realistic right now as the Domers'.

True. They can do like us by spending good budget on football and a little on other athletic programs. Why do you think our basketball assistant coaches left for Clemson? Most school athletic departments spend money to attract recruits. Beside football, I believe FSU spends a lot more money on other sports than we do. Their basketball and other Olympic sport programs are stronger than ours.

ACC surrendered all third tier television rights for football to ESPN/ABC but kept them for men's basketball. That arrangement will likely result in substantial revenue for schools with a strong basketball following like North Carolina and Duke.On the other hand, it will do very little for schools with a more traditional football following like FSU, Clemson, Virginia Tech and Miami.

I think he future is suite of elite private schools, or it crumbles too. clemson and FSU, gone, big 10 picks off the aau schools, 4 of the six, pitt, md, va, unc, duke gt, and the other two scramble to see if SEC will take them (from remaining AAU teams not selected and VT NC state, Wake, BC, Syracuse and the rest huddle with the left overs to form a new conference, (UCONN, Rutgers Temple Louisville, Cincinnati, South Fla, central Fla, memphis) and they go no where and the only teams really allowed to play in the national championship is SEC, Big 12 Big 10 and Pac 10. case closed. This time VT will have not governor to help them. (and the possibility will be UVA in the Big 10, along with UNC and MD, WV in Big 12 and NC State and remaining ACC school in the SEC and VT the next louisville.
