Fans everywhere rejoiced late last week when FOX announced that "Fringe" would be renewed for a fifth and final season consisting of 13 episodes. The show, which has enjoyed a fervent cult following despite never garnering big ratings, seemed destined for cancellation at the end of this season, with the producers scrambling to come up quickly with a series finale.

Now, however, they'll have a chance to wrap things up properly. While fans would have surely loved one more full 22-segment season, the show's talented cast, writers, directors and producers will at least have the time and space to create a proper ending to a series widely considered one of the best modern sci-fi shows on television.

It's the fans who can pat themselves on the back for this: Their dedication to "Fringe" and very vocal support for it apparently played a huge role in allowing the show to have the send-off that it deserves, instead of just a rush job a few weeks from now (word is that the producers shot two endings for this year: one for renewal, one for cancellation).
