"4. Can he bring the students back?
I will be the first one to tell you that Virginia Tech students are some of the worst basketball fans on the planet. We will always show up for Duke and UNC. Anything else? Well if we're good, we'll go. If we like the product on the court, we'll probably also go. It's absolutely miserable, and another topic for another day.
With that being said, JJ is going to need to re-energize the students. A little secret of Seth Greenberg's tenure is that he recruited students almost harder than he did actual recruits. And I know there's a whole lot of revisionist history about Seth never connecting with the student body, but I would say that that would be one of the few things he did well. With the exception of this season, students went to more basketball games during his tenure than ever.
I realize that a coach can only do so much, but if the students pack the house again, he can already mark his first year as at least a mild success."

Sounds like we're the UVA football fans equivalent in Bball. Fair weather. And yes that does suck.

I remember Cassell (it was just the Coliseum then) rocking during the 1973-74 season, right after we had won the NIT in overtime against Notre Dame (where did the trophy go?). And I remember the packed houses in the 80s, but Seth did a great job reaching out to students. It would be a shame to see his accomplishments lost in the apparent widespread hatred that has built up against him. I hope JJ continues the amazing outreach that Seth practiced with the students, especially the lunchtime chalk talks in Dietrick.

It was rocking in the 60's also. We had a very small student body, but everyone could get in, and there was a real stigma associated with staying in one's room on a home bball night.

'75-80 here. Went to almost every BB game. It was the thing to do back in the day (BITD).
Both of my children graduated in the last 5 years from Tech, and they went to 90% of the home games. But most of their friends couldn't be bothered. I still find it hard to believe that with 50% MORE students than BITD, we can't find 3,000 interested on a consistent basis. It is sad.
