This whole thing is too strange. 2 months ago I never thought this article could have been written.

Can Byington recruit? His resume looks good, but the C of C bio stresses X's and O's. It says nothing about recruiting. In any event, I trust that JJ will make a good decision.

There's a couple of really interesting tidbits from that article that may or may not offer some insights into some situations, depending on how you read them...

“I certainly don’t think (James) expected (Greenberg’s dismissal). In fact, I know he didn’t, because I saw how he reacted to it. …
Suggests that job instability (the notion that SG would be fired) was not a motivator for JJ to switch jobs. An alternate reading could suggest that JJ was "surprised" that Seth was fired this year instead of next.

When he told me he had an interest in our position, I was flattered.”
Could be a case of fuzzy wording, but this implies that JJ initiated contact with Clemson and not the other way around.

I'm not really getting at anything here, just that there seemed to be a lot of mystery around JJ leaving for CU. One reading of some of the quotes in this article suggests that JJ was actively looking to get out, and not because he thought SG wasn't long for this world. Take that for what you will.

The other part of that article I liked validates the decision, if we were to go with an assistant, especially a first time one, to go with JJ (as opposed to someone from Duke or Carolina or something). Brownell does a good job explaining the challenges a new coach faces and compares the situations of JJ to Rick Ray's down at MissSt.

IMHO that's the #1 staff need.

I'm not too concerned about Coach J on the recruiting trail. It remains to be seen how he reacts in tight games where some quick strategic decisions need to be made. That's where a good "x and o" coach could be invaluable to him during his inaugural voyage thru the ACC schedule.

Everyone assumes that his recruiting is great, but what do we know about his ability to evaluate talent? I think that was Seth's biggest talent and is an integral part of the recruiting process. I just hope we don't fall of the map in this regard.

Good observations. My point was more that it seem like Brownell is putting together our coaching staff. Just seems weird.
