I always liked Seth. I feel terrible about how it all unfolded....

Obviously, only the people inside the department know all of the details that lead to this point. I thought Seth was great for Virginia Tech basketball. He took over a program that had struggled, increased our recruiting presence, made us competitive. Beat Duke and UNC at their place - something I thought it would take Tech years to do. He finished in the top 4 numerous times giving us a bye in the ACC tourney....

I guess the lack of NCAA bids stands out to me as the biggest failure during Seth's tenure - but a coulple of those I felt were out of his control as we did get a screwing by the tourney committee. I do agree with him on this point - the job is much better than when he took it over.

I wish Coach Johnson the best but the last two weeks seem much more about getting Seth out than it does elevating the basketball program. Coach Johnson may end up proving to be a step up and a great hire, but I'm having a hard time getting my head around this. I thought Weaver fired Seth because he had lined up the "wow" hire. I really did. The press conference today was anti-climatic. Feels more like a stop gap than a wow hire. I hope to be wrong - I think Coach Johnson is a likeable guy - but this whole deal is risky. I thought Seth had it going in the right direction and this feels like starting over.

Seth must have made some serious enemies in the Athletic Department for things to unfold like this.

Big-time coaching is a tough business. Perform or perish. All the players in the arena have a thick skin due to press, alumni/boosters, etc. They wear their big boy pants and know that they can fall out of favor quickly. IIWII people -- that's the business.

It wasn't on-the-court performance that did Seth in.

These days it seems like kissing the boosters asses and making good with the AD is more important than actual results these days. Why get rid of Seth for something that is as risky as this? Even if you fired him at the end of next year, we still would have had Harrel and Wood in the fold.

I wouldn't be so certain of that. If he had won a few NCAA tournament games, they might have forgiven everything else.

Your feelings seem appropriate in that Weaver treated Seth shabbily. When you are firing someone, there is no valid reason to damage or insult them them more than you have to. Doing so tarnished the reputation of Virginia Tech.

    I guess "death" means dealt.

To put it mildly, SG did not treat people around the athletic dept. with respect. Arrogant, foul mouthed, general pain in the arse are terms used by staff members I personally know on campus that had to deal with SG on a consistent basis.

I said this earlier, a real issue was Seth was the stereotypical New Yorker, and most in the South simply do not know how to cope with and deal with that pushy, straight forward, abrasive attitude. We have a thinner skin and take things more personal than we probably should.

Why do I say this? I live in Blacksburg, but I have to deal with this situation daily in my own work setting, and have for a number of years, longer than SG has been around. I've seen people brought to tears, literally, over basic questions, just how they were asked by somebody like him - not just in person, but even in emails. There is just a different approach.

It is really easy for the masses to rise up against the few, in terms of general opinion.

On the campus of Virginia Tech, many that deal with him might think he is a jerk, on the campus of St. John's, he likely is perceived as just a normal person that people are used to dealing with.

Seth never mellowed to the VT way, nor did VT ever meet him in the middle, either - just my opinion on this 'he was an ass' innuendo.
