We are returning (by car) from Miami to VA next week. We're thinking about stopping at Charleston or St. Augustine to do plantation and/or historic tours.
Lot of miles between Miami and VA. Any attraction or overnight stay recommendations? TIA

Parker's bbq in Wilson NC? Probably not what you want, more food and if I suggested "South of the Border" you'd hit me. The problem with places like Charleston is that they're a pretty good haul from 95, and most of 95 is just eastern farmland. Savannah's kinda nice in a walk around and look at houses with Spanish Moss in the trees kinda way and where the "Garden of Good and Evil" is (The monument's no longer in the cemetery) good food etc. Hate to say it, but I think 95 is just a long haul, no way around it. You could drop in on my relatives in NC, see how they're doing, say hi.... OK, never mind.
My next car will have cup holders that can accommodate a mason jar. That is all. - Ms Schwend

Do yourself a favor and spend a day and night in Charleston. I've driven across the country multiple times and done a lot of traveling(including international)[Humblebrag], and Charleston is just a unique place. Great food and architecture. The weather this time of year is starting to get hot, but not too bad. If you possibly have the time, spend the extra day there. If you're with kids, that'll be a tougher sell. Definitely a place adults love, but kids to teens is a tougher sell. Savannah is like Charleston Lite. A lot of people I know like it better than Charleston. Personal Preference really.
Savannah and C-town are the only good places along 95 I can think of.

Charleston isn't really along I-95, pretty far off the path actually.

Second Charleston. We were just there in March and enjoyed ourselves. The historic area downtown is just the right size to spend a day touring on foot or in one of the horse drawn carriages. There are a lot of great food choices and decent shopping.
We stayed out of downtown in North Charleston next to the civic center in a nice Embassy Suites. It's a 10 minute drive and we saved about $100.00/night. (they do free cocktails and free breakfast). It is right off of I-26 which connects to I-95 so your travel is easier too.I don't always talk to UVa Grads but when I do I always order the Large Fries.
