I'll be interested to see what Johnson's coaching philosophy is.

He was an assistant under Greenberg. He had to have input on the day to day operations of the program and the style to which would be played. So, is he just like Greenberg? All defense, throw the ball around on offense, and launch a contested shot with the shot clock winding down? Will we play more up-tempo? I hope his style isn't similar to Greenberg's. More than anything, I think Greenberg's coaching style is what drove the fans away. To put it bluntly, it was boring basketball. Hopefully, Johnson's style isn't similar. It'll be interesting to see if he can put together a good staff being a first time head coach.

As are most head coaches, Greenberg was somewaht dictatorial -- what he said was what was done. I'm sure he received input from asst coaches, but reality is he was what he was and it was clearly reflected in the VT teams on the floor. Johnson will get to imprint his own philosophy honed from several asst coaching stints

It's like guessing how Beamer's assistants would do as head coaches. Every head coach in every sport dominates the direction of his program. Sometimes, depending on the coach, his assistants are more than yes men, sometimes they're not.

We won't know for sure what JJ's style is until about January.

Agree, but 100% sure he won't be just like Greenberg as the first poster questioned

Oh, no doubt. Even Brad Greenberg had a different philosophy. Everybody always does. If we could combine Greenberg's defensive mindset with a true uptempo game, that would be cool. Maybe the Hurrying Hokies will return, after decades in the dustbin.

Regardless, I wish James Johnson well.

As long as the offense doesn't consist of pass the ball around the perimeter for 30 seconds and shoot a 3 every time I am OK with it.

Yes, the only negative to JJ as HC is that the vast majority of his experience is under Greenberg. It's not like he is coming in with a bunch of Boeheim or Smart experience to draw upon. He had some short stints before coming to VT, but not anything substantial. In theory, he has developed his philosophy under Seth. Be that as it may.

I hope we keep the same approach on defense. Almost anything would be an improvement on O. Same with end of game mgt. Over the long haul, we need to recruit a better shooting team
