This year's D is ranked #1 (Total D) at the end of this year.
1) Do you think they will be #1, Top 5, Top 10, Top 50, off the radar screen.
2) What are the chances this year's D becomes VT's all time best unit? 100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, no chance.
I for one am salivating at having a better unit than last year and think there is a whole lot of upside; so much so that LT and Co. may become background conversion.
3) How many points do you think the D's scores this year? > 40 pts, > 30 pts, > 20 pts, > 10 pts, zip zilch nada.
I think the D has not seen the endzone aka INT or FR return to the house as much as they used to, but this year may be different. I think the D will change the outcome of a couple of games.

I guess I have been punched in the gut one too many times by our offensive philosophy and terrible special teams play calling. Instead of being so excited about our defense which will certainly be great, I wonder how many times the defense will be left out to dry (like against Michigan)

Don't think they were put out to dry. Wasn't offense's fault our two DB's collided to let them score at the end of the half, nor was it the offense's fault their WR had a great grab at the back of the endzone.

You shouldn't have to shut a team out to win a game.

You are the winner for at least anwering the question without finding a way to make this about the lack of Offense!

#1 No
#5 Poor chance
#10 Decent chance
#15 Good chance
#50 - If we are out of the top 25 I and Coach Foster will be very unhappy.
No chance as the best ever- weakness in LB's and no depth in the secondary.
10 points or less

Forgive my ignorance, but what year was our highest ranked overall defense, and how highly ranked were they?

We have been ranked #1 but I can't remember the year. Something like 2005-6, maybe even two years in a row. The stats on cfbstats.com only go back to 2007 but heres what they say:
2011 7
2010 26
2009 9
2008 9
2007 3

Lots of good QB play in the ACC this year, at least on paper, so number 1 seems unlikely, but top 10 is very doable with the talent on this defense.
