so how hard do you hit a guy? hard hitting has always been a part of football and we all knew playing it that it was not the safest thing to do in the world. Any tackle in any game can be the end of your career, anyone that has ever played knows that, its a violent game, geeez

Honestly I think you are completely overestimating the effect these bounties had on the players. Go watch a clip of Sean Taylor at Miami and tell me if you think his style of play changed because he got a few hundred bucks for making a hit w/the Redskins. Heck, the guy laid out a punter at a pro bowl. Thats who these guys are and what they are paid to do - generate violence, pain, and intimidation. Do I think its right for a guy like Gregg Williams to encourage it - well, I dont think its right but this is a case where I think the punishment is way stiffer then the crime and I really dont like how Goodell handled this. Between this and what he did to the Redskins and Cowboys for not engaging in collusion he has overstepped his authority.

fyi, for the 4 plays they used as examples for the saints, two of them were not even flagged on the field during the play, yes it makes sense what happened today

I think its ridiculous - Goodell is basically saying "I'm shocked, SHOCKED to find out gambling is going on in here" and throwing Peyton to the media and mob wolves. I expect at least a quarter of the coaches who have been in the NFL in the past 10 years and still coaching to be punished in the same way or this stinks to high heaven. This is NOT just a Saints deal.
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
-- C. S. Lewis
