I'm not worried about Corey Marshall gaining weight. I'm more worried about the DT's having what BStreet would call "good mass."

Well,I want him to have about 280 lbs of "good mass". Its tough to go up against 300lb OL all season when you only weigh 250 lbs.

280 is too heavy for him and imo would hinder his quickness. i think given he is very strong already for a player his size that he could effectively get up to 270 but not much more than that (if he stays on the inside).

Whether it`s 270 or 280,he needs to get bigger to handle the 300+ Lb OL game in and game out for a 14 game season. At what point it impacts his speed/quickness is unknown at this point.

Is why we are usually under sized up front AND why recruits like Koren Kirven do not come here. I hope Marshall goes sellfish and asks to play end more. Hopefully he has the ability to have more success there. He wont be able to make any money at the next level as a dt.

Because recruits like Kirven have choices of way bigger names, they go there. In the absence of being able to get the fast big ones, our "culture" is to go speed and frame rather than size.

Where does the idea that somehow we establish a "culture" and hold to that above going after stud DLs come from? We do play big jumbo sized LB at DE but again that is not a "culture" but an accomodation to not being able to start with the ones of Kirvens caliber.

The idea that a reason Kirven didn't come here because of that is just foolish. He didn't come he because it was VT vs Bama and they are a big boy and we are not a big boy of that statue.

Hey Amp if that was the case then how come we don't lose EVERY recruit that Bama or LSU offers? I understand they are going to beat us the majority of the time but you act like we have NEVER gotten anyone that any bigtime program offers.

Because some kids don't want to go to Alabama and LSU, and they want to come to Tech? The idea that there is one reason why every 18 year old makes the decision he does -- ANY one reason -- is not a proposition you want to place your bets on.

Take this one, the response was to a poster who asserted that we have a "culture" of recruiting a certain way and that "culture" over rides everything else.

My response is that we don't have any such "culture" and any assertions that we aren't doing better in recruiting is because of failings of our coaching staff are pure bull$h1t.

You are correct that we get some but not many. I would suggest we hardly ever beat them for guys that are on their A list or even guys like Kirven who may not have been on their A list until late in the process. When a school like Bama, LSU heck even Miami for a number of recruits, puts the rush on, then it becomes less the effort of our recruiting and more the "mystic" of the school and it's money, tradition etc. We have a tough time with that.

Simply put we have a coaching staff that has moved us to heights unimaginable to both Hokies and college football in general. That is the truth.

But on this board there is a loud contingent that begins with the assumption that the biggest failing of both football and mens basketball is the coaching and all we have to do is try harder or try differently and we would be a lot closer to Bama etc.
