I haven't done much lately except work on the site transition, so I know this is old news .... but Clemson is spending money on assistants that most football programs can't ever hope to match.

I was reading the ACC Sports Journal today, and they said that offensive coordinator Chad Morris is making $1.3 million a year, and new defensive coordinator Brent Venables is making $800,000 a year.

That makes Morris the highest-paid assistant in college football -- or at least, he was in December, when he signed a contract for that $1.3 million a year.

To get an idea of the ramp-up, here's the timeline on Clemson offensive coordinator pay:

2010 season: Billy Napier makes $270k a year
2011 season: Chad Morris makes $450k a year
December 2011: Chad Morris gets increase to $1.3 million a year

So in the span of one year, Clemson increased their OC pay by just over $1 million, or 381%, per my trusty HP 15C's Delta-Percent function.

The increase at DC hasn't been quite so drastic. Former DC Kevin Steele made $700k during the 2011 season (boy, is that paying a lot for nothing ... Steele was good against VT, but his defenses stunk against everyone else, and Clemson finished 71st in total D).

By contrast, Bud Foster makes just over $400k per year (per this link) and has an $800k annuity waiting if he's still here at the end of the 2014 season.

That equates to (if nothing changes):

Bud Foster's pay, 2012-2014: ~$2 million
Chad Morris' pay, 2012-2014: $3.9 million
Brent Venables' pay, 2012-2014: $2.4 million

We're about to find out if throwing money at things is the key to winning the conference, because Clemson's throwing more cash at their program right now than anyone else in the conference.
