CUSA-MWC merger is a go...
a 16 team football league (15 for all sports) consisting of ECU, Marshall, UAB, Southern Miss, Tulane, North Texas, Tulsa, UTEP (8 surviving CUSA schools) and Air Force, Colorado St, New Mexico, UNLV, Wyoming, Fresno St, Nevada, and Hawaii (football only) (8 MWC schools) says it is being designed to be an 18-24 school league potentially hosting it's own conference semifinals for football.

should be interesting to see who wins the 'i'm #6 pissing contest', this new league or the BigEast....

The Big Whatever is gonna be #6. I don't see a flagship program in the Mountain USA conference. Both leagues are ugly as sin, but at least some folks might tune in for a Friday night game in the Big All-Over.

for a school like ECU who actually puts butts in seats at home games, that's ok because in years you travel to Hawaii, you're allowed a 13th football game which can be played at home. an extra 40k+ in ticket sales and concession sales should more than cover the cost of the trip to Hawaii. besides, being in a 16+ team league with divisions, how often will ECU have to travel to Hawaii? and remember, Hawaii is football only, so no softball or fencing team trips across 5 time zones...

maybe this is phase 1. phase 2 will be a 'merger' between the BigEast and the MountainUSA where they essentially share a mega TV deal but operate almost completely independent as an Eastern Conference (18-20 total teams, 14-16 football teams) and a Western Conference (14-16 football teams). hell, maybe they even absorb the WCC to have western counterparts for G'Town, SJU, etc.
nevermind, that would involve the BigEast having forethought AND understanding that they are not the greatest conference in all the land...carry on..."This no more resembles that than something unlike something else resembles that." - Loosely quoting PHNC

In future BCS, yes there will be no automatic qualifies in the BCS, but rather conferences will make their OWN deals with the big bowls. Therefore Orange with ACC, Sugar with the SEC Rose with Pac 12 and big 10 and Fiesa with the Big 12. BCS will only pick 1 and 2 period. The bowls will be free to pick who they want. If 4 SEC teams get the at large too bad.
for teams in the MWC and CUSA (Cd even maybe the Big East). this is a way to create their own system. My understanding it will be very geographic organized. it will be very unlikely that East Carolina will go to Hawaii for a long time. It will go to 18 to 24 teams; you can do the math. 4 6 member teams. Therefore a team in the east will play their division and and maybe 3 or 4 from the other divisions. They have already said they would do a semi final and final (I can see the east and west will be 'championship games during the same week as the ACC SEC championship weekend end and a designated bowl game will host the championship game. These teams are being boxed out by the super conferences and this is a good way to counter this. (expect NBC/Comcast to help

CUSA-MWC-? Could look something like this with 24 teams...
The fastest way for a major league veteran to play for a playoff contender is to sign with the Pittsburgh Pirates in the off season. He is guaranteed to be traded to a playoff team by August.

so what if, say, Fresno State is 14-0 after winning the Conference Semi-Final on Championship Saturday (they had an away game vs Hawaii so got to play a 13th reg season game). at 14-0, they are #2 in the BCS (or #3-4 in a BCS playoff scenario). do they play for the BCS championship (i assume they do), and if so, how do you play a conference championship bowl without the best team in your conference? i know that's a long shot, but 15 years ago, who would have through Utah, Boise St, TCU, and Hawaii would all have played in a combined 7 BCS bowls (let alone won 5 of the 6 that weren't against each other)?

Is the BCS going to be around much longer? I've been reading/hearing that if the BCS is still around that it's main function will be to select the top 2 teams, leaving the individual conferences to work out deals with the former BCS bowls. I can see the SEC getting 3 or more former BCS bowls in the future while the Big East may get none. As for the CUSA-MWC Conference, I doubt that any of those 24 teams would be in the top 2. Three of the 4 former MWC/WAC teams that played in BCS bowls are in BCS conferences now/soon. Anything is possible, but those 24 teams rarely even get close to the top 10, most have never hit the top 25. I understand your point. They could play the championship game a week after the division championship games or start their season 1 week earlier so their championship game can still be played on conference championship Saturday.
