Awesome. I watched a marathon of The First World War on the Military Channel last week. Great show.

No kidding. I can't imagine spending 6 years sniping back and forth across the same 200 yards of dirt. The Armored TANK may have been the greatest invention to come out of that war! Pretty much assures that the days of building trenches to fight a war are OVER.

Not only the methods used to fight it but the causes of it. No clear bad guy like a Hitler. Just a bunch of countries hedging their bets and a bunch of soldiers caught in between.

But yeah, guys running head long into machine fire, guys hunkered down getting pounded by artillery fire. Like the American Civil War, the hardware had rendered the accepted tactics obsolete.

In many ways the Great War is much more fascinating to study then WW2 (imo).

So much going on in WWI including many new countries formed afterwards etc etc. It's definitely overlooked in military history study because WW2 has so much more video footage to capture the imagination.

Think the machine gun can into it's own in that war. The idea was that if there was a gun that spit out that many rounds that fast, no one would be stupid enough to charge across "no man's land." The idea of a tank was brillant! After the war, the Germans developed "tank tactics" even before they had tanks. They were that impressed with that innovation.
