Would it make a difference to anyone else besides me?

Beacause they have to stick a finger in the air to tell which way to go. Right now that have the finger somewhere else.

Often times it would be one of their current opponents. Wouldn't want to boost their opponent's credibility in any way.

Bingo. Also, it may be that multiple candidates will want the same VP (e.g. Christie) and picking one now ties him down to one or the other.

And besides, instead of five people neglecting their jobs for a year while they campaign for the nomination (well, I guess it's a special case this year since three of them don't currently have a job, but usually it's sitting governors and senators running) you'd have to double that number because their running mates would also be neglecting their jobs.

I don't think I'm easy to talk about. I've got a very irregular head. And I'm not anything that you think I am anyway.

I kinda remember Mondale doing that... His campaign was already in trouble, he picked Ferarro as a VP running mate. That kinda just emphasized his desperation, probably worsened the death spiral. He then demanded that the Republicans name their VP selection, they just laughed and let him twist in the wind.

That's the only time I remember any time in recent history anyone did that and it failed miserably. As someone suggested below, keep your powder dry until the convention.

Huh? Mondale ran against Reagan in 1984. Was there any doubt who Reagan's VP was? **

I remember the Dems in their '72 convention voting on whether to require their prez candidates to do that. (Yeah, I'm old.)
I believe in giving everyone the respect they are due - whether they like it or not.
