Here's my take. Human nature is such, and 18 year old kids especially, if you ask them why they didn't choose you, are not likely to say "I don't like the coach", or "I don't buy what he's selling", or "Virginia Tech sucks". Instead they're gonna give you an easy answer. "It's too far away", or "Too rural", or "Too cold".
That's easy. Doesn't hurt anyone's feelings. You're shooting down a place, not a person. And if you're the coach, or scouting bureau it's an easy cop out. "It's not me, it's the crappy location".
Of course, then the kid signs with Kansas State, or Syracuse, or Notre Dame and you're left scratching you head.
Location? It's an excuse if you let it be an excuse. Kids will flock to a good coach wherever.
