For those that want to replace Beamer - replace with who?

I personally think we'd be nuts to replace Beamer at this point. However, I wanted to get an idea of who those that want Beamer gone would pick to replace him.

My own opinion, if we couldn't haul in a Saban/Miles/Meyer stature coach, we wouldn't be able to replace him with anyone you could reasonably expect to do better at VT.

That's just crazy talk. There will be no replacing Beamer until Fancy Gap Frank decides he's done and hangs up his whistle. The man has earned the right to finish his career on his terms. It's that simple.

Nobody. I want Frank to shake the offense up (again and again) until he gets it right. I'd also like him to impose a no attempted block, noo fake punt rule on himself for bowl games played in New Orleans.

Don't want to replace Frank. I want Frank to quit relying on luck, and I don't mean Andrew.

No reason to even think about it. Whoever succeeds him will have huge shoes to fill, and my guess is that we will not see the level of success that Beamer has achieved.

I disagree. I think Beamer has done so much for this program that he is going to leave us in a great position to continue our success and competing at a very high level. He has been here so long that he has not only built our team, but our program. When he leaves, he will be gone, but his legacy will (most likely... I hope...) live on through people like Bud Foster and Shane Beamer. Most teams can't say that. Look at Bama. They bought Saban, he is bringing amazing success. But down the road when he retires, THEY will likely be the ones who have a couple down years, because he is the only thing at Alabama right now that matters. Beamer has positioned us, partly in being loyal to his staff and his staff being loyal to him, to not skip a beat when he retires, because he is leaving so much behind for our program.

I have no idea how the post-Beamer transition will work, I envision it being smoothly handed over to Bud or Shane while the other still has a huge influence on the program. Hopefully that is the case, and if so, I think we will be just fine when Frank decides to go (which I hope isn't anytime too soon)

Not seeing that as much as wishing we would have a big boy offense. The same problems every year never seem to get resolved, and it seems like Beamer doesn't see the problem since VT is winning 10 or more games every year.

It also is frustrating because our D plays at a high level... and logically it makes sense that fans should be looking for the offense to strive to play at that same level of excellence.

As far as how we play at a high level... that's not important, really. We just need to be effective with our running and passing games. Not looking to have an OSU offense, but something a little more like Stanford's... smart and talented, able to run and pass that everyone would respect. I like that we are getting away from the Dual Threat QB scrambling for his life, but good enough to keep drives going. With that said I wouldn't want VT to stop recruiting those talents. It just helps recruiting OLmen, WR and QBs if we run a balanced and respectable offense that doesn't rely on gimmicks or an X factor. Our X factor should be executing plays smartly. If the QB just takes off and scrambles all the time... the OLmen really don't get into a zone of normal and good blocking... they are trying to figure out how to help the QB... different every time. That's too much of breaking tendencies.

It would be great to see VT get 4 to 6 yards on running plays, and 12-18 yards on most pass plays... when those are working well, then the shot down the field can be more effective. It's like we work too hard to set up that long pass, and when it doesn't work, we are going to be punting in a down or two. I'm sure it is easier said than done... but if Beamer is as conservative as everyone thinks... we should be focusing on moving the chains, by finding safe ways to earn 4-9 yards every time, while allowing for a good defensive play now and then. Beamer just doesn't look good trying trickery... that's not what has made VT good. Good D, a focus on disciplined play, few penalties, smart field position decisions, and quality STs. Did I mention a strong running game?

Anyway... change for the sake of change is one thing, but to start making bad decisions to break tendencies just isn't BeamerBall, at all. I think Beamer is trying to move away from a highly conservative offense, listening to fans, but isn't comfortable with these changes... I think a passing game can be physical, and conservative (at least safe) and I also think Beamer likes a physical style running back... David Wilson was always looking for the home run carry, and there was nothing wrong with his style or success at VT... it's just he wasn't selling out to the run up the middle with bruising power. Even when his runs were very physical... defenders were more concerned or respected his speed than feared his bruising power that would wear LBers out.

It is hard to pin point what exactly is outta whack... but VT had it in the mid to late 90's, but somewhere along the line we lost a degree of toughness, focus and yet we are just as successful, if not more successful. I am not saying our players are not tough, but they are not feared for their toughness... maybe more for our team speed now.

Maybe Beamer is mellowing out as his tenure rolls along... I would rather see Beamer bring back a little more edginess from the players, than feeling he needs to try some trick plays to break tendencies. Some tendencies are smart and good sound football. I'm not looking for players to get penalized for personal fouls... Alabama dominated LSU with 1 late, off sides penalty. There are ways for players to dominate without being unsportsmanlike. Usually those kind of plays, sparks the other team. Alabama did nothing to spark LSU... smart, dominating play.

Maybe most fans just want to see Beamer and staff evolve within their style and approach... and since Bud Foster and the D are playing at a high level... it falls on the Offensive coaches.... and I think they are doing everything they know how to do with the level of talent they have. We just don't have Bama's assistant coaches. I'm sure all fans want to see Beamer succeed in taking VT to the top.

Oh, to have Bustle and Grimes back. Our O and OL haven't been the same since they left.
