Who is Virginia Tech’s ideal crossover rival?

When the ACC expands, Syracuse will join the Atlantic Division, and Louisville is expected to join that division as well.  If the ACC decided to reorganize the crossover games, who would you want Virginia Tech to play every year?

  1. Wake. All I want is a fair advantage, lol.

  2. NC State or Clemson are both good, but I still believe that Louisville doesn’t even belong in the ACC because of low accademics.

  3. Notre Dame

  4. Pittsburgh was not a choice?? That’s who I would’ve voted for.

  5. I still remember the days when the HOKIES went to louisville to play Menphis, and louisville in the Metro games.
It was nice when we watched them play football to, that seems such a long time ago, it was a 5 to 6 hour trip from B’burg. BRING IT ON.

  6. I say South Carolina. I thought we paid real money not too long ago to get OUT of the Big East.

  7. Switch UVA and BC. Crossovers would be VT-UVA, BC-Syracuse, Pitt-Louisville

  8. Why even have a cross over rival? I would do away with them. Play the one’s in your division and rotate through the other division – 2 per year. Similar to now less yearly ‘Rival’.

  9. UVA should be our crossover rival.

  10. There should be an option that says, ANYONE BUT BC!

  11. If we’re not in the same division (realignment) – why no mention of GT? Realize everyone would like to get as far away from that offensive scheme but … The 2 Techs – ATL

  12. Clemson is my choice for their game day atmosphere and to be the best, you have to beat the best.

    But Chris’s logic would win.

  13. UVA. The ACC really missed the boat on this one, would make for a great crossover rival and a potential well attended ACC championship game.

    • So you’re expecting Hokies to fill the entire stadium? It could happen. Especially if it was played at FedEx!

  14. I think that natural rivals should be crossover opponents, ie, UVa.

  15. Cross-divisional games still have an effect on whether or not you win your own division, so the ideal is to play a creampuff like Wake Forest every year. Not only do you get a nearly guaranteed win, one of your division rivals has to eat a probable loss to Clemson/FSU.

    • I voted for NC State but Wake would be a close second… neaby, nice road trip, they’re building a nice program there, and the Dixie Classic fair!

  16. My vote was selfish. BC is less than an hour from my house, so of course I voted for them as the cross over.

  17. NC State: Aside from the obvious proximity both are land grant schools with undergrads at one going to grad school at the other and grad students at one joining faculty at the other.

  18. dabo for u.t. coach! not cutcliffe.

  19. Clemson won’t always have Boyld, Ellington, Watkins, or Hopkins and VT won’t always be down on defense. The raise of Clemson is only temporary and they should return to being just an okay football team very soon.

  20. I voted ncstate:

For Hokie-family travel proximity from Blacksburg
I want to beat my daughter’s and son-in-law’s alma mater
Size, modernity and facilities of stadium
Seems VT-ncs games have been interesting, competitive games recently
Both are land grant U’s with Aggie and Engineering traditions
Ease of media coverage capability (compare to Winston Salem, syracuse, Durham) tends to add TV viewers

If they just had hired Al Groh, Mr. “It is what it is,” to be their coach – the annual ncs beat-down would be even more fun for about 5 or 6 years!

  21. I say Texas A&M. Oh wait….

    • I picked Clemson. Didn’t know they had a rivalry with GT. Are you sure? LOL In light of that news, Louisville due to proximity. I was around for the Louisville/Metro mess. That was a long time ago. Don’t understand the hatred that some folks still have for the Cardinals over that. The people who booted us out along with VCU are long gone. Ask the Papa John’s about VT and the first thing they probably think of is MV2 and the “stomp”.

  22. I have always tought that our crossover should be UVA. We play them every year, and if by chance we should one day both make the championship game that would be the ideal situation.

    • I think the reason would be to not have a rematch in the ACC champ. game

      • He is implying that uva should be switched to the Atlantic division and then we would be on opposite sides as crossover opponents, so we would still play each other every year but would also have the opportunity to both win our divisions and play in a championship game. This is an opportunity for schools of NC and FL (the only other states with more than one school in the state in the ACC) but not afforded to VA. It was a crime.

      • Of course, for that to happen UVA would actually have to win their division… ;-)

  23. I would *rather* play NC State every year (that’s how I voted, with Clemson a close second), but we know that there are several Atlantic teams unavailable to us due to long standing rivalries:
    Florida State (UM)
    Clemson (GT)
    NC State (UNC)

Any of those three would be good, and NC State ideal. But given what would really be available, I’m sad to say that it probably should be Louisville:

Wake: Nothing to gain by beating them annually
BC: See above, but we’ve also played poorly against them frequently over the last decade
Syracuse: Putting as many years between trips to the Jiffy-Pop Dome as possible is a good thing

Louisville at least has some recent history of top-25 appearances, so the games ought to be well-contested and a win really meaningful to the Hokies’ ranking and perception.

  24. by subtraction FSU=UM, NCST=UNC, Wake=Duke,GT=Clemson(just because of being more southern, even though I like the thought of VT-Clemson)leaves Syr and Louis for the Va schools. UVA= Syr(let them battle for the jiffy dome and Lacross)VT=Louisville fits. I am in that pack that hates Louisville for the past transgressions against us but it would make for a really fierce and hated rival. Just for making the ACC a better rival type conference. Just as voting who I would love to play every year that’s Clemson.

  25. It was close between Clemson and NC State, for me. I ultimately chose NC State simply because it’s so close. If we played them every year, I suspect a nice rivalry would blossom.
