Imagine a football team at its peak, having just reached its first ever bowl game—the Gator Bowl, no less, in a time when there were only eight major bowls—deciding to throttle its football program not by submitting to NCAA demands, but by voluntarily and permanently abandoning its aspirations for the sport.
Here’s how it happened: http://secondlevelfootball.wordpress.com/2012/10/05/when-football-wasnt-king-scandal-at-a-small-school/

When I was at W&L, the school was very serious about academics and the Honor Code. Going to an Honor Trial with a jury of students at the Lee Chapel was a very interesting experience. Daunting if you are the one on trial.
Very interesting. Cutback in football hasn’t hurt W&L’s endowment with them having a $1.2B endowment vs. our $0.6B. Also the toughest school in VA to get admitted to.
Good article and appropriate for the times!
