Rustburg (VA) senior forward Marshall Wood will not ask for a release from the letter of intent he signed with Virginia Tech last November, Justin Feldkamp of ABC 13 (Danville Lynchburg Roanoke) reports via Twitter.
“#vthokies – confirmed – rustburg’s marshall wood met with james johnson today and wood will stay with Virginia Tech,” Feldkamp wrote.
Wood is one of two high school seniors who signed with the Hokies in the November Signing Period. The other is 6’8″ power forward Montrezl Harrell, who is also expected to speak with new Tech head coach James Johnson this week (if he already hasn’t). As of yesterday morning, Harrell had not made a final decision regarding his future with Tech.
The 6’8″, 210-pound Wood, Rustburg’s all-time leading scorer, averaged 24 points and 13 rebounds per game this past season as a senior.

I don’t know the length of JJ’s contract, but let’s hope they have given this fellow at least 2 years to recruit, then re-evaluate the situation. This is the best the Hokies could hope for. If the man has a half court offense I still think there is enough material in the short term to be competitive. Any chance that Maryland’s Mychal Parker is still foating around? He’s a risk that a good coach could straighten out, and he could help the depth issue.
Good news for sure. I am encouraged and hoping both recruits can be Hokies after all!
GO HOKIES!!!!
Is Wood still going to Prep next year, or will he be in Blacksburg?
I believe there is a qualification issue, so HMA would increase a test score or meet a core requirement or improve a grade. I believe there is a chance he will qualify. HMA has labs where their students can practice PSAT, SAT, and ACT tests everyday if they wish.
There is NO qualification issue. he is fully qualified. His interest in preping was solely to develop his bball skills further before entering college.
Sounds great! Hope Harrell sticks with us as well.
Coach Johnson earning his pay already. If he can keep both that will speak to his strength in recruiting which is very important in basketball.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! One down, one to go.
