We’re just one day removed from the dismissal of Seth Greenberg as Virginia Tech head coach. Neither Montrezl Harrell nor Marshall Wood, the two recruits Virginia Tech signed in November of 2011, has officially asked out of his letter of intent. But according to reports, Wood will do so soon and Harrell “probably” will as well.
- Joe Davis of ScoutsFocus.com has several tweets on Montrezl Harrell, the 6’8″, 235-pound senior power forward out of Hargrave Military Academy.
There was this at 1:33 p.m. today: “Montrezl Harrell, Virginia Tech’s top signee, will “probably” seek his release according to his Father.”
And then there was the following at 1:40 p.m. today: “Kentucky, NC State, PITT, Providence, L’ville, Xavier, Cincinnati & ‘Bama are schools expected to make a push for Montrezl post-release.”
- According to Mark Berman of the Roanoke Times, Marshall Wood will ask for his release soon. The 6’8″, 210-pound forward reportedly will still consider Virginia Tech but wants to take a step back and re-evaluate his college choice.

Hope these guys were more attracted to the school and the chance for playing time than Seth. I think a lot of recruits and players might look at this as an opportunity, depending on which coach we bring in. If anything, it will improve the situation as apparently Seth was why so many players and coaches ended up leaving, so there may a better program to play in than the one they’re in now or are considering if being recruited.
Is the LOI not binding? My impression was that a recruit signs with the school, not the coach. They are supposed to understand going in that this is the case. of course,VT can let them out of the LOI if they want. But,why do it at this point before a new coach is hired?
I would hold them to the LOI and let them transfer later if they were not happy with the program…after a new coach has had them for a season.
Yes, the LOI is binding, but schools look bad when they won’t release kids, or if they unreasonably block a kid from going to another school. Look at Wisconsin, they took heat over a kid when they blocked him from going to any ACC school.
This is typical when you have a coaching change. It’s not time to panic because we lost 2 mediocre recruits.
I think you have very high standards if u call MH a mediocre recruit. Take a look at the teams who have already joined the chase for his services and tell me he is mediocre by their standards.
These aren’t “mediocre recruits” at all. In particular, Harrell’s stock has risen dramatically lately. He was the MVP in the Capital Classic all-star game recently and everyone who saw the game agreed that he was the best player on the court. That’s why you have the likes of Louisville and Kentucky circling now waiting to pounce once he becomes available. He would see significant PT in Blacksburg next year.
As for Wood, he’s a 6’8″ player with wing skills and a very good outside shot … something we could definitely use.
Still, Seth had to go. When it gets to the point where your AD can’t find anyone to fill assistant coaching vacancies because your head coach has developed such a reputation as a total a-hole, you have to make a change.
More like “Steve the Queen” if you think MH is a mediocre recruit.
Is that last paragraph really necessary? Does is make you feel better to get in a kick?
What the hell was JW thinking. We now have nobody to hold the program together. If JW has a high profile coach ready to go I will recant but I haven’t seen any rumors yet! At this point the program is definately taking a different direction but it is not the direction I was looking for!!
If you’ll read some of the posts from insiders both here and on other boards, you’ll quickly come to the realization that this was something that had to happen. I support Weaver 100% on this. Seth has nobody to blame but himself for what happened.
I’ll agree to support Weaver in the decision. I detest the way he handled it. Hokies don’t treat Hokies like that. We just don’t.

The question that keeps bugging me is why JW had to hold a press conference. Why not just tell CSG he is fired and then issue a press release. The announcement of the press conference BEFORE CSG was told still has a foul smell. I have been a fan of the way JW has managed the the improvement in VT’s overall program, but I have always been suspect that he did not respect the people around him nor the fans who buy the tickets. I am not upset with the departure of CSG, but I am disappointed with the way JW handled it.
VT has to give them their release. Weaver was hit with the same question years ago with our wrestling program and he didn’t budge. I hope he will hold these two to their LOI until we name a new coach. Then leave it up to that coach as to how to proceed. Tough business but we have to protect ourselves at the same time.
I wonder how many walk ons we’ll need to have enough to practice. VT basketball reminds me of my 401K…about the same as it was 10 years ago.
